In 1977, Professor Eberhard Fuchs received the Dr. rer. nat. degree in biology from the University of Munich, Germany, and worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Animal Physiology, University of Bayreuth, Germany. In 1982 he was recruited by the German Primate Center (DPZ), Göttingen, Germany. He has always been interested in understanding how stress affects brain function as well as brain structure and behavior. He pioneered studies on neurogenesis in the primate brain and stimulated developments in MRI/MRS in small laboratory animals. In 2002, he received the distinguished Science Award donated by the Stifterverband der Deutschen Wissenschaft (Germany's donors' association for sciences and humanities). His laboratory uses functional neuroanatomical, neuropharmacological, electrophysiological, behavioral and molecular approaches to investigate functioning of the brain in animal models of mood disorders. The aim of his work is to elucidate brain structures, circuits, pathways and mechanisms that underlie normal and pathological behavior. The Fuchs laboratory is involved in a series of national and international research programs integrating inputs from other research fields with the ultimate aim of developing and testing new therapeutic strategies for stress-induced disorders such as depression.
